Job Summary

Installs, tests, and maintains hardware, wiring, and fiber optic cabling used for voice and data communications.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Measures, cuts, splices, tests, and installs communications wiring and fiber optic cabling according to layout plans.
  • Installs hardware and connects communications wiring and/or fiber optic cabling to the appropriate hardware.
  • Examines mechanisms and disassembles components to replace, clean, and adjust. Repairs parts, wires, circuits, and signaling units as needed.
  • Operates and tests hardware to ensure elimination of malfunction.
  • Terminates communications wiring and fiber optic cabling by stripping insulation from terminal leads and installing the appropriate connectors and/or punch blocks.
  • Observes hardware and/or systems to detect malfunction and make proper adjustments, relocation, or replacement.
  • Maintains hardware and analyzes operational malfunctions with testing devices to locate and diagnose nature of defect and ascertain repairs to be made.
  • Completes Help Desk tickets relevant to current experience level.
  • Coordinates work schedules of sub-contractors used for additional labor on projects as needed.

  • Ability to communicate effectively in written and verbal form with partners, contractors, and construction workers.

  • Ability to be flexible and adapt to changing priorities.
  • Basic mathematical skills.
  • Basic knowledge of Microsoft Excel and Word.
  • Ability to research information, establish facts and draw valid conclusions.
  • Ability to comprehend and interpret information.
  • Ability to operate a fork lift/pallet jack.
  • Ability to use precision hand tools.
  • Ability to work independently for long periods of time.
  • Ability to frequently travel to off-site and out-of-town locations with possible overnight stays.
  • Ability to work on-call and flexible schedules including nights, weekends and holidays.
  • Required to drive in accordance with the BGC Driver policy.

Education, Experience, and Qualifications

  • High school Diploma or GED required. 
  • Two or more years of related experience; or an equivalent combination of experience and/or higher education required.
  • Minimum of 21 years of age required.
  • Completion of vocational or technical school preferred.
