Job Summary
Performs diagnostic tests for routine maintenance procedures on tractors, trailers, Company vehicles and other Company equipment. Repairs or replaces malfunctioning transportation equipment.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Diagnoses, repairs or replaces malfunctioning components, parts, and other mechanical or electrical transportation equipment.
- Performs PM inspections to look for lube at every grease fitting and potential repair needs and to change oil/filters as needed.
- Assists with performing services on brake system inspecting brake chambers, slack adjusters, brake kits, etc.
- Assists with the replacement of crossmembers, dolly legs, and doors.
- Interprets diagnostic test results using dials, gauges and other computer equipment.
- Completes routine DOT inspections and documents accordingly.
- Inspects batteries, brake assemblies, bearings, etc. and replaces as necessary.
- Follows inspection procedure checklist in order to perform vehicle inspections on Company tractors and trailers.
- Test drives vehicles to diagnose malfunctions.
- Inspects brake systems and related parts to ensure proper functionality.
- Provides routine maintenance such as changing oil, checking batteries and lubricating equipment and parts.
- Disassembles and re-assembles equipment and vehicle parts.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Intermediate knowledge of federal and state regulations related to tractor and trailer requirements and associated environmental issues.
- Intermediate knowledge of warranty policies and procedures for trailer trucks.
- Basic knowledge of Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations and applicable Company policies.
- Basic mathematical skills.
- Basic knowledge of Microsoft office applications including Excel, Word and Outlook.
- Ability to safely operate an oxyacetylene torch.
- Ability to operate a trailer
- Ability to successfully complete mechanical aptitude and other maintenance related evaluations.
- Ability to use power tools, precision hand tools, box cutters, cutting torches and welders.
- Ability to safely operate heavy machinery/ hazardous equipment.
- Ability to comprehend and interpret information.
- Ability to research information, establish facts and draw valid conclusions.
- Ability to learn new technology systems, methods and processes.
- Ability to reason, form concepts, and recognize and solve problems.
- Ability to communicate effectively.

- Ability to work on-call and flexible schedules including nights, weekends and holidays.
- May be required to drive in accordance with the BGC Driver Policy.
- Must have visual capability to see up close and far distances.
- Must have auditory capability to hear and understand information given whether directly through a headset unit, over the intercom, and/or the ability to hear warning signals/sounds, hazardous sounds, etc.
Education, Experience, and Qualifications
- High school Diploma or GED required.
- One or more years of related experience; or an equivalent combination of experience and/or higher education required.
- Current DOT Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), A/C Certification, Brake Inspector Certification, and Vehicle Inspector License required.
- Minimum of 21 years of age required.
- Completion of vocational or technical school preferred.

- Frequently required stand and walk for long periods of time.
- Frequently required to bend, stoop, kneel or squat.
- Frequently required to talk and hear.
- Occasionally required to sit, crouch, crawl, climb or balance.
- Occasionally required to use hands for reaching, touching or handling.
- Occasionally required to push, pull, maneuver or lift objects up to 100 lbs.
- Occasionally required to use fine finger movements (ex. typing or sorting).
- Attendance at work is required.
Work Context and Environment
- Work is generally performed in a tractor/trailer maintenance facility.
- Frequently exposed to outside temperatures and weather.
- Frequently exposed to industrial odors, fumes and dust.
- Occasionally exposed to wet, slippery or damp conditions.
- Occasionally exposed to cleaning agents, heights or confined spaces (ex. air vents or crawl spaces).
- Moderate to loud noise level.
